Mercanti Double Eagle Reverse Proof NGC Reverse PF69 First Day of Issue. In numismatic history very few medallic artists and sculptor-engravers have had as much impact on the field as John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Mercanti's career began as a sculptor-engraver in 1974 and spanned 36 years until his retirement in 2010. During his time at the U. Mint Mercanti is credited with designing over 100 U.

Coins and medals, more than anyone in U. Mercanti is of course best known as the designer of the reverse of the American Silver Eagle Type 1. First issued in 1986 the American Silver Eagle is far and away the most popular, most collected modern coin in the world. In 2021 the United States Mint introduced the Type 2 Silver Eagle which featured a brand new reverse design. For many collectors, the excitement of this new design was tempered by the loss of Mercanti's iconic image that had graced the Silver Eagle reverse for 35 years.

But what if instead of having someone else create a new reverse design, the U. Mint had John Mercanti create a new obverse and reverse design? And what if the Mint called that coin the "Mercanti Double Eagle"? Issued in 2022 by the Sunshine Mint, in collaboration with John Mercanti this 2oz. 999 fine silver Mercanti Double Eagle Reverse Proof Medal is the result of that "what if". The Sunshine Mint is a private mint in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, that is best known as a supplier of silver planchets to the United States Mint. Mercanti accepted this project as a challenge to see what HE would have created had he been tasked with re-designing the Silver Eagle in 2021. The obverse design depicts a Majestic Bald Eagle in flight soaring high over a tree-lined mountain range while the sun and its rays can be seen rising in the background.

Also on the obverse are the inscriptions, "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2022". On the reverse, an eagle is stoically perched in the foreground with an American Flag along with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "DOUBLE EAGLE", . John Mercanti's initials, "JM" are also inscribed just below the eagle's tail-feathers.
